HARAMBEE IS SWAHILI FOR “PULLING TOGETHER”
Special guest, Louise Paulsen, from the Canadian Harambee Educational Society (C.H.E.S.) joined us at our service on Sunday, June 11, 2017 to share in a celebration of our 20-year partnership (1997 – present) through the Outreach Ministry at Tsawwassen United Church.
Louise’s power point presentation, “Where are They Now?” provided an inspirational history of the major influence C.H.E.S has been in over three decades of empowering hundreds of young women to transform their lives through education. The images and touching, personal recollections gathered during her visits to Kenya and Tanzania , chronicled the amazing success story that is C.H.E.S. A slide show of all the students that we sponsored in order for them to complete their four year secondary school program was display.
Here at TUC we have sponsored 13 students since 1997. Our one student, Rukia Rabaku from Tanzania graduated last year in 2016 and our current student, Leveria Amassi also from Tanzania will complete her Form 4 Programme with her planned graduation scheduled for next year in 2018.
Those interested in learning more about how C.H.E.S. carries out its mission or to learn more about individual sponsorships can visit their website www.canadianharambee.ca/.
We are in the process of compiling an album of photos and letters from our students and, where possible, to access a C.H.E.S. database which will allow us to update their progress since their high school years.
